Bittersweet

Nov. 27th, 2004 | 08:24 pm
mood: bittersweet
music: silence fills the room

The week was a blur ... a mere faded memory of wonderful things, what they call 20/20 hindsight. Sure Rachel and I had our fights, how could you not, living together in such close quarters? Eight nights ago Rachel arrived in Ann Arbor, and now she is gone ... alone on some foggy rainy expressway on her way back south.

The week was fun and exciting. We might not have done everything we had hoped for, but it was great nonetheless. The 1 a.m. Jimmy John's, the Mochi ice cream eating, the 5 a.m. knocking on Alex's door. The random taking of photos on the expressway and the stop in Flint will be in my memories as well. The snowstorm in Saginaw was fun, as was the power outage. The pumpkin pie eating and mochi making were wonderful bonding moments.

Going to the casino was fun too. I am glad that Mike was able to call just in time. Mike is the greatest guy in the world! I have never met a guy who was more awesome than him! Rachel had this feeling about a certain slot machine, she insisted I play it. I reluctantly accepted, and placed my dollar in the machine. I pulled the lever, and bam 20 bucks comes out. SWEET! I asked Rachel why she picked it, and she said "Because it said 'storm' on the top!" Today we went to the mall looking for Rachel's birthday gift. I suggested we make 8x10 photographs and frame them. We made 3 pictures all black and white and put them in black frames. They looked so cool. Happy Birthday Rachel! These are the moments you treasure forever.

It was 6 months ago before this trip that I had last seen Rachel, yet it seemed like yesterday. Today at 2:46 pm EST was the last time I saw Rachel. We stood in the rainy parking lot of Marshall Fields at the Fashion Square Mall in Saginaw hugging each other. It was cold and windy, and cars whirred by in the busy parking lot, yet time seemed to stand still for us. I waved good-bye, not knowing how long it would be again 'til Rachel and I would see each other once more ... 1 month? 6 months? 9 months? I walked back to my car and drove off; I waved my hand in the direction of the expressway, and I peered into my rearview mirror to see Rachel's car drive off.
